Popular children’s show characters will come to life on Mar. 30 at Lakeland College’s Alumni Hall. As part of Koba Entertainment’s Great Big Show Live, characters from The Backyardigans, Max & Ruby, Franklin the Turtle and Mike the Knight will take to the stage to sing, dance and entertain a horde of young children. The show is part of a Western Canadian tour by the company that began on Jan. 23 and ends in Winnipeg on April 3. “Audiences will get to spend a delightful afternoon with some of their favourite characters in this one‐of‐a kind, funfilled event, full of unforgettable moments that will last a lifetime,” said artistic director Patti Caplette, in a Koba press release.

The theatrical show will be separated into four parts, allowing for audience interaction with characters from each of
the four TV shows. Kaylan Lindsay is a former cast member and on‐the‐road dance captain with Koba Entertainment. She worked for the company for three years, going on tour each year with the theatre shows. “On the road the director doesn’t come with you so the dance captain’s job is to keep the show intact,” Lindsay explained from her home in Ontario. She decided to settle down in her Ontario hometown in 2013, but is still surrounded by the same characters because of her 15-month-old daughter. “It’s funny too, she’s not super into any of the cartoons yet, but we do read a lot of the Max and Ruby books and she thinks those are funny,” Lindsay explained. “She also found a lot of the plush dolls of the characters I’ve played; they’re not in mint condition anymore,” she added, with a laugh.

The Koba tour touches down in a lot of the bigger centres in Western Canada but also some of the smaller towns like Vermilion for instance. It also passes through North Battleford, Camrose and Grande Prairie. And whether it’s in the bigger cities or smaller towns, it’s interacting with the kids that Lindsay misses most. “Going to little towns and seeing so much of Canada; that was really amazing. But my favourite part was always the kids and seeing their faces, especially being in a mascot costume,” she explained. “You can really watch the audience for their reaction and see their faces light up; it’s magic for them.”

Tickets for the show are $26.50 and can be purchased through greatbigshowontour.com.
