CARTOON CHARACTERS TAKE TO THE STAGE IN NEW SHOW

Over two-dozen children’s cartoon characters are coming to life as part of a new touring production coming to the E.A. Rawlinson Centre

Over two dozen children’s cartoon characters are coming to life as part of a new touring production coming to the E.A. Rawlinson Centre. Koba’s Great Big Show is coming to the E.A. Rawlinson Centre on Jan. 30. The production brings a number of cartoon characters, including Max and Ruby, from the screen to the stage.

Cartoon characters take to the stage in new show “The characters and the personalities and the heart of the show definitely remain intact. But it’s like seeing it through a whole different medium,” said Patti Caplette, Koba Entertainment artistic director and choreographer. It was Caplette’s duty to adapt four children’s programs The Backyardigans, Max and Ruby, Franklin the Turtle and Mike the Knight from the small screen to the stage. She said it takes “a very, very interesting and detailed
approach." Prince Albert residents will have the chance to see those characters inperson when Koba’s Great Big Show comes to the E.A. Rawlinson Centre on Jan. 30. Caplette said the production’s target audience is “two to 92” years old and she encourages viewers of all ages to attend. She also said it’s a good starting point for children to be introduced to theatre. “I don’t think a child is ever too young or too old to enjoy the theatre, and certainly getting to know the theatre through something like this where it’s so familyfriendly and participationfriendly I hope to create theatre audiences that can last a lifetime,” she said.

“It’s really one of those ‘Oh my gosh I cant stop smiling’ experiences. And no matter how many of these shows I see and sitting in the audience I can’t help but be overwhelmed with the enjoyment that the audiences and the parents and the kids are having together.” Caplette said the new show is a compilation of some of Koba’s most popular productions. The show is divided into four stories and features a total of 27 characters and 30 original songs. And the viewers are encouraged to join in. “I got a message from the cast the other day and they said, ‘Oh my goodness, this audience was amazing.’ They were all up dancing with them and hopping and skipping, they were right on the button,” Caplette said. “The cast is really excited to get that kind of feedback from audiences.” The Great Big Show is Koba’s 42nd production in the last 12 years, “so we’re kind of celebrating all of our previous hits,” Caplette said. She said crowds have been enthusiastic and following along with the performers onstage. “What I enjoy is I like to see the interaction of the parents with the kids, like playing the games together, maybe singing the songs together, so it’s totally different than a child sitting in front of a television,” she said. “Here they really, really do get involved and seeing the wonder and amazement on their kid’s face is just priceless.”
